The One-day Workshop on Spatial-temporal Models in Epidemiology and Health was held in Lisbon, Portugal, on June 20th, 2014. It was organized by the Centro de Estatística e Aplicações da Universidade de Lisboa (CEAUL). The workshop aimed (i) to bring together researchers who work in epidemiology and health sciences; (ii) to promote a fruitful discussion on the role of statistical methods, such as time series analysis and spatial statistics.

This special issue of REVSTAT — Statistical Journal consists of peer-refereed papers generated from the research work presented at the workshop. This collection of papers reflects the stimulating research in the area of Epidemiology and Health Statistics, covering a wide range of topics.

Statistical Models for Diagnosis and ROC Analysis offers a fresh look into recent advances, with an eye on future developments and on trending topics for the upcoming years.

Modern biomarker data analysis entails challenging modeling issues of the utmost importance for public health. Medical tests often use biomarker data as input, and the statistical evaluation of these tests—before their widespread application in clinical practice—requires the collaborative effort from experts with a wealth of backgrounds.

Special issue on Collection of Surveys on Tail Event Modeling

«Modern methods of statistics of extremes have been widely applied in risk modeling, with more and more scientists concerned with extrapolating to the tails of a distribution, often beyond any existing data. Complex estimation and inference problems arise when assessing the probability of such rare events, and ingenious statistical methods have been developed based on various assumptions useful for extrapolation. This special issue of Revstat—Statistical Journal presents an overview of such methods, by discussing recent developments in the statistical modeling of extremes and their applications to the analysis of risk. It covers a variety of topics, from methods for scalar extremes, often applied in a discrete time setting, to the infinite-dimensional setting, thus far mostly applied in the space domain.»
